Here are some ideas, based on the principles I mentioned yesterday.

1. Go for a looser, more natural looking garden instead of a lot of containers and plants trimmed into submission.
2. Plant a variety of plants. Lack of diversity makes it easier for bugs to prey on your garden.
3. Improve the soil. Work several inches of compost, rotted leaves, and other organic matter into the top 10-12 inches of your ground.
4. Build soil like mother nature. She constantly drops leaves and branches, which creates a natural compost over time. We can cover our garden beds with shredded leaves, grass clippings, and compost to add nutrients and prevent moisture loss, as well as other benefits.
5. Make your own compost. There is nothing better than decayed organics from a blend of all kinds of yard and kitchen “waste”. Why get rid of bags of organic material then buy bagged planting mix?
I hope I’ve started the ideas flowing, feel free to leave a comment or idea.
More Tomorrow,
Kevin
